Jury awards woman $813,000 after a medical misdiagnosis forced amputation of her foot

A jury in the state of Washington has ordered a doctor to pay more than $800,000 to a woman in a case of medical misdiagnosis that led to a foot amputation.

Dr. Nathan Stime, a now-retired physician, had diagnosed Darlene Turner with terminal cancer in 2004. But the woman actually was suffering from pneumonia. The condition caused her to lapse into a coma, which later resulted in the amputation of her left foot.

Turner's medical malpractice lawsuit alleged that Stime was negligent for not conducting an appropriate physical prior to his cancer misdiagnosis.

The Spokane jury agreed, awarding her $813,000 for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering as well as the loss of a consortium.
