A Kentucky jury has awarded a couple $6.2 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit stemming from the death of their infant son.
After a 15-day trial, the jury found that Dr. John P. Short and his employer, Ashland Emergency Medical Associates, were negligent in caring for two-month old Derrick Donovan Willis.
The infant died at the King's Daughters Medical Center emergency room in early 2010 after his parents, Derrick and Shara Willis, took him there because he was having trouble breathing.
The jury found that Short incorrectly performed a tracheal intubation, inserting a tube down the boy's windpipe to maintain an open airway. It caused him to suffocate, the jury found.
