Two recent tragedies involving young girls prove once again that there is no such thing as "routine" surgery.

In December, 3-year-old Finley Boyle of Hawaii died after undergoing a root canal procedure. Her parents this week filed a medical malpractice / wrongful death suit against the dentist, Lilly Geyer, alleging improper medication with incorrect dosages caused the death.

Also last month, 13-year-old Jahi McMath of California was declared brain dead following a routine tonsillectomy that triggered a series of cardiovascular problems. McMath, in a case that drew national headlines, was released from the hospital on a ventilator this week and her parents are searching for a hospice.

The two cases share heartbreaking parallels with a recent case successfully litigated by Ross Feller Casey founding partner Joel Feller. Feller obtained a $6 million settlement on behalf of the parents of Mariah Edwards, a 17-year-old who died after an uncomplicated tonsillectomy at a Montgomery County, Pa. outpatient center.

Feller's work on the case forced needed safety improvements at the Abington Surgical Center. Also as a result of the case, Ross Feller Casey has created a Post-Operation Care Checklist of things parents should ask before their children go under the knife (view checklist here).
