A jury in New York has awarded $62 million to a woman who lost both her legs to an infection after a botched gynecological procedure at a Long Island hospital.

In her medical malpractice lawsuit, Stacey Galette successfully alleged that doctors at Winthrop University Hospital punctured her bowel during an operation in 2009 to remove an ectopic pregnancy in which a fertilized egg grew outside her uterus.

Galette, now 34, had complained of pain, but doctors at the Mineola, N.Y. hospital discharged her. The infection spread and she was readmitted a day later. Gangrene set in her legs and they were amputated below the knees two months later.

The tragic story of Galette, who is now wheelchair bound, is yet another example of how mistakes by doctors during simple procedures can lead to life-altering consequences.
