A West Virginia jury this week found an emergency room physician liable in the death of an Ohio woman and awarded more than $4 million to the woman's family.

The jury awarded the sum in the wrongful death lawsuit to the family of 43-year-old Terry Hiam of Tiltonsville, Ohio.

In 2009, Hiam was taken by ambulance from an urgent care facility to Wheeling Hospital. She was examined by Dr. Stephen Heirendt and discharged with a diagnosis of "chest pain of unclear cause, and bronchitis," The Wheeling News-Register reported.

Eleven days later, Hiam was found unresponsive at home and was pronounced dead at a hospital in Martins Ferry, Ohio.

A more thorough examination by Heirendt would have revealed warning signs of an impending heart attack, the jury found in the medical malpractice case.
