Paralyzed Woman Turns to Ross Feller Casey for Help in Medical Malpractice Suit

When Judith Meyers, of Centre Hall, was admitted to Mount Nittany Medical Center in May 2009, she complained of abdominal pain and general physical weakness. In the two-week stay that followed, doctors examined Meyers to determine the cause of her symptoms. Several of these doctors recommended neurological testing as a means of ruling out the causes of her symptoms. However, no neurological tests were ever administered because no doctor ever actually ordered them. The tests were only mentioned in the doctors’ notes.

In early June 2009, Meyers, 70, was discharged to HealthSouth for rehabilitation. While in rehab, her symptoms worsened, as the pain and inability to move her legs increased. While at HealthSouth, Meyers had “neuro consults,” but no tests were performed.

In July 2009, Meyers was diagnosed with a 4-centimeter schwannoma tumor on her spinal cord, prompting an emergency surgery that left the 70-year-old woman paralyzed. According to her attorney, Joel Feller of Ross Feller Casey, this all could have been avoided if the doctors had administered neurological tests when she was first admitted to the hospital in May 2009.

Feller said, “That’s really the sadness of the case, it was all preventable. There was a two-month delay of failing to do what they recognized they needed to do all along…they just never performed it.”

Ross Feller Casey filed a medical malpractice suit for Judith Meyers against Mount Nittany Medical Center, HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation, and seven doctors who “failed to perform appropriate examinations and testing” that could have diagnosed the tumor on her spine in a timely manner and helped prevent the worsening of her symptoms and the emergency surgery that left her paralyzed.
