The makers of a hair smoothing product are being sued by hundreds of women nationwide who claim they have suffered hair loss and other damage after normal use.

Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion 30-Day Smoothing Kit marketed itself to women who wanted "smooth, shiny manageable hair with no frizz." Instead, the product caused some women to suffer visible bald spots, discolored hair, and even burned scalps in some cases, according to the suit.

The legal action against Unilever and others also alleges that the maker used an ingredient that would release formaldehyde, which is a cancer-causing substance that could produce irritation, skin sensitivity and breathing difficulties. Also, the plaintiffs allege that the manufacturer knew of the hazards but never warned the public.

The product was discontinued last year, but plaintiff lawyers believe that it still might be for sale by some retailers.
