University of Pennsylvania hospital tells authorities Cardiologist may have performed unnecessary stent procedure

Officials at the University of Pennsylvania Health System announced that they have notified authorities that a cardiologist may have performed procedures to insert stents in patients that were not needed.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Vidya Banka, 71, was not employed by the health system but had privileges at Pennsylvania Hospital.

The system had outside cardiovascular experts review a sample of Banka's cases involving stent procedures over the past five years. The review found that medical tests did not appear to show significant blockages in the blood vessels of the hearts of about 20 patients, a hospital spokeswoman told the Inquirer.

Based on the findings, the hospital system has notified the U.S. Attorney's offices in Philadelphia and the state Board of Medicine. It has also contacted the patients involved and offered them a chance to see a Penn cardiologist at no cost.

Contacted by the paper, Banka disagreed with the findings and said he was not offered the opportunity to give his opinion.
