A California jury recently awarded $22 million in damages to a 48-year-old woman who was paralyzed after being treated at a hospital for migraines.

Doctors in 2006 performed a cerebral angiogram on Robyn Frankel to check the blood flow in a vein in her brain. The procedure, which involved injecting a dye into a vein, sent the Menlo Park, California woman into a coma. When she awoke two weeks later, she was paralyzed from the neck down.

In her medical malpractice lawsuit against the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Frankel successfully argued that the procedure was not necessary and that she was never warned of the dangers involved with it.

The verdict was among the largest ever handed down in Santa Clara County.
