A $22 million verdict was returned in a medical malpractice action over a hospital delay in giving Ana Gomez a blood transfusion after she gave birth and began to bleed heavily from her uterus.
She gave birth to a healthy baby girl, but because of the delay, she lost half of her blood and suffered cardiac arrest while awaiting a transfusion.
Robert Ross, a founding partner of Ross Feller Casey, filed suit in the Superior Court of New Jersey and charged that the director of the blood bank had failed to implement a plan for emergency delivery and that he had not acted in a timely manner in the case of Ana Gomez.
Ana Gomez suffered severe brain damage and underwent therapy to regain her speech and the use of her limbs. She remains, however, confined to a wheelchair and requires a full-time caretaker.
The case, Ana L. Gomez and Manuel A. Gomez v. Atlantic City Medical Center, et al., was reported in legal report and newspapers.
