A jury in Vermont has awarded more than $43 million to a woman who was paralyzed as a result of a car seat that allegedly collapsed on her during an accident.

The verdict is believed to be the largest ever in the state.

After two weeks of testimony and seven hours of deliberation, the jury on Friday sided with plaintiff Dzemila A. Heco, 51, of Essex Junction, Vermont and against the seat manufacturer, Johnson Controls Inc., of Milwaukee.

The personal injury, product liability lawsuit stems from an August 2007 accident in which Heco's 2000 Dodge Neon was struck from behind by another vehicle.

Heco's suit alledged that the car seat back collapsed on her, causing severe spinal-cord injuries and leaving her a paraplegic. She was wearing a seat belt.
