Matt Casey served as co-counsel in the high-profile case of Jonathan Cozzolino, who was killed when a folding table in his school’s cafeteria collapsed on him. In an intensive review of thousands of documents, Casey discovered that the defendant, Chicago-based, Midwest Folding Products, had been aware of the safety problems connected with their folding tables like the one that killed five-year old Jonathan. In a Lawyers Weekly USA interview, Casey told reporters that Jonathan Cozzolino went to school at the Hamilton Disston Elementary School in the morning and never came home. He leaned against the table, and it fell on him, causing the fatal head injuries.

Beyond the high-dollar amount of the settlement, Midwest Folding Products has stopped making the table and redesigned the model to make it more stable. There are, however, other folding tables still in use that may present a danger in cafeterias.
