A jury has rendered a nearly $11 million verdict in a medical malpractice lawsuit involving a pregnant woman who suffered a stroke after a doctor told her she didn't need to go to the hospital.

The case involved Jennifer and Al Billups, Sr., of Toledo, Ohio who had sued Dr. Dayna Mohammadione and Maumee OB/GYN Associates.

Jennifer Billups was 26 weeks pregnant in March 2012 when she developed severe abdominal pain and a severe headache, according to court documents. She called the OB/GYN practice and received a call back from Mohammadione, who was not her primary obstetrician. After Mrs. Billups described her symptoms, Mohammadione advised her they were likely caused by a gastric condition and told her she didn't need to go to the hospital. Mrs. Billups suffered a stroke at home the next day and, as a result, suffered permanent physical, cognitive, and emotional injuries.

Her baby was delivered safely by emergency Cesarean section.

The Lucas County Common Pleas Court jury awarded $10,928,188, which included damages for past and future economic and noneconomic losses.
